The reader of a hundred years from now will read the same sentence and find it the same — that is the durability our chrome is asked to honour. Anything that interrupts the sentence is louder than the sentence. The system disappears.

Attention is the beginning of devotion.

Mary Oliver — from Upstream, the title essay

Teach the children. We don't matter so much, but the children do. Show them daisies and the pale hepatica. Teach them the taste of sassafras and wintergreen. Attention is the beginning of devotion — without devotion there is nothing. Attention without feeling, I began to learn, is only a report.

An openness — an empathy — was necessary if the attention was to matter. Such openness and empathy my mother had in abundance, and shared with me, although she had received it from no one.

This echoes a highlight you saved fourteen months ago from Deep Work — "the ability to focus, without distraction, on a cognitively demanding task" — though Newport frames attention as a skill and Oliver frames it as a tenderness.
